Anthony Neubauer was a very good swimmer and diver - he was known to have had a perfect jack-knife. When Anthony heard about the accident, he jumped on a streetcar and headed downtown to help out in any way that he could. As soon as he arrived, he jumped in and started pulling people out, as many as he could. His efforts soon became that of a recovery diver, pulling victims from the river.
...had a perfect jack-knife....
Anna Meinhart, a passenger aboard the Eastland, said after being rescued: "There were a million heroes that day. I don't suppose anybody ever knew their names." Anthony is now no longer one of these "nameless heroes."
