Laura Scharringhausen and her fiancee, Herman Gierman, planned to attend the Western Electric picnic. Herman could not attend, however, because of his work schedule. This prevented them from participating in the trip and perhaps ultimately the tragic disaster. Laura and Herman did marry and raise a family.
Through the years following the Eastland Disaster, Laura often spoke about the tragedy and the loss of so many of her friends with whom she worked. In the memorial edition of the Western Electric newsletter she marked with an "X" the names of her friends who did not survive.
