James H. Clinton, Sr. was on his way to work on the morning of the Eastland Disaster when he heard the screams and noise. He came upon the scene early and spent all day recovering victims from the river.

James (shown in his back yard at 1130 North Pulaski) spent twenty-five years of service with the Chicago Police Department. His star number was 116. Of his twenty-five years with the CPD he spent seventeen years in the Loop where he served in the traffic division (eleven years at Randolph and Wabash as well as six years at State and South Water). His final eight years he served at the Maxwell Street Station in the market district. He retired with a perfect record and a recommendation from the Chief.
